They've had plenty of other first party games that failed to chart and or garner critical praise.
Wii Music is the first Nintendo Wii first party game to show that Nintendos Blue Ocean strategy isn't flawless.
I think the main reason why it didn't/isn't putting up Wii Sports numbers is because there's no new gimmick attached to it,you just move your controller around like every other Wii game before it.

Anyways,Square have been desperately trying to create the next final fantasy for a long while now,and every single one of their attempts was a commercial and critical failure.Was it because those attempts were only on 360?
